On 7th July 2021, the Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam-Oyster Bay in Partnership with Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam-Ukonga and Rotaract Club of Kairuki-Dar es Salaam visited Ukonga, Dar es Salaam to inspect the installation of anti-mosquito window screens, a part of the Malaria Focus Eradication Project. Implemented in the Kisiwani and Kichangani suburbs of Ukonga, the project aims to provide support to individuals who cannot afford to install anti-mosquito window screens in their houses and thus reduce malaria prevalence in the area.
The target beneficiaries are individuals who cannot afford to repair or install anti-mosquito window screens in their homes. They were selected based on the existing state or condition of the windows and usage of the houses (residential and owner-occupied).
Since inception, 103 windows in 32 houses have been repaired. Challenges faced included requests from owners whose houses are used for commercial purposes as well as the poor repair and maintenance culture of some residents.
Going forward, we hope to identify more eligible houses and beneficiaries so as to roll out the project to other suburbs of Ukonga.
With a heart to #ServeToChangeLives, Rotarians, Rotaractors and Community Leaders together with their friends and family members showed up bright and early and spent the better part of the morning engaging residents by distributing flyers to increase malaria awareness.
