Medicine donation to Ukonga Prisons Health Centre

It was really nice to meet the folks at Ukonga in person, to chat with a few prospective members (government officials who are keen), to see the fruits of all the work we put in, to hand over the medication, to address an audience in Kiswahili (it’s been a while!). The inspiration it provides is long-lasting. These are words from PE Aisha during medicine donation to Ukonga Prisons Health Centre.
She said ''It is very easy, sitting on Zoom call after Zoom call, to forget what impact and community engagement looks, feels, and sounds like in Rotary''.

Chartering a new Rotary Club of Ukonga, in the midst of this Pandemic

Our Club(Rotary Club of Oysterbay) not only has it been the biggest and most diversified club in Tanzania but matured and gave birth to six new Rotary Clubs in less than three years time. Chartering of the sixth Club by the name Rotary Club of Ukonga took place on 12th January 2021. Not only that members were asked to join Rotary in Ukonga  but also we(Rotary Club of Oysterbay) took them hand by hand to help them see what Rotary means and gave them an experience of being Rotarians before chartering. We translated the Four way test, constitution to easy their way in, paid charter fee ( to encourage them) and when they decided to renovate a single class at Juhudi we as mother club asisted the second one!!! We are now working on a global grant for the two schools and on top of that Medical Camp is on the way.

DG Jayesh Leads the Handover of a Boundary Wall to Msasani Primary School

Posted by Zaituni Ituja on Oct 18, 2016

The Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam Oyster Bay celebrated the completion and officially handed over a boundary wall donated by the club to Msasani A and Msasani B primary schools. The wall has been built to increase security around the schools for the protection of students as well as schools’ properties where prior to the building of the boundary wall, the students and the schools’ properties were subject to uncontrolled and unsafe activities.

The building of the wall which costs about Tshs 35 Milion was made possible with funds raised on one of the club’s fundraising activities. Different stakeholders donated to the cause and enabled the wall to be built which creates a safer learning environment to students especially to girls.

The wall is part of continued efforts done by the Rotary Club of Oyster Bay in improving learning condition at the schools. Some of the work already done at the schools include building of two libraries along with stocking of the libraries with various books, provision of clean and safe drinking water for the schools, a one day medical camp where screening and treating of various medical conditions was done, teachers training and planting of trees.

The handover ceremony was attended by the club’s members as well as various leaders of the Tanzania and Uganda Rotary District. The District Governor Mr. Jayesh Asher lead the handover of the wall to the two Msasani Primary Schools.

DG Bob Nsibirwa's Visit to RCDOB

Posted by Zaituni Ituja on Oct 14, 2015

On Tuesday 13th October 2015, The Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam Oyster Bay (RCDOB) was graced with a long awaited visit by the District Governor (DG), Rtn. Bob Nsibirwa accompanied by the Assistant Governor (AG), Rtn. Agnes Batengas.

With the visit, the club held a business meeting where committee directors presented their reports to the DG and in turn DG Bob shared his experiences and comments on how the club can improve in each area.

After the business meeting, DG Bob was taken on a tour at the Msasani Primary Schools where a number of service projects are undertaken in the two schools (Msasani A and Msasani B). The DG was warmly welcomed by a group of students singing and dancing to Tanzanian traditional tunes and we even saw some moves of his own.

It indeed was a fun visit, but did not stop the intended business. DG Bob presented a cheque to the school master which will settle the school’s water bill in assistance to the schools sanitation efforts. The DG also saw the libraries that were recently refurbished and stocked, and took a tour of other areas of the schools that are due for work.

We thank DG Bob for taking his precious time and spend the morning with us at RCDOB and wish him a great Rotary year ahead.

Pictures of the visit can be viewed HERE

DG Bob Nsibirwa to Visit RCDOB

Posted by Zaituni Ituja on Oct 12, 2015
The District Governor, Bob Nsibirwa will be visiting the Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam Oysterbay on Tuesday 12th October 2015 during the club's weekly meeting which starts at 07:30 at Golden Tulip Hotel. The DG will be accompanied by Assistant Governor, Agnes Batengas.

DG Bob and AG Agnes will get a chance to meet the club members and hear about the club’s achievements and further goals for the year. DG Bob’s visit will be concluded with a short visit to one of the club’s service projects, The Msasani Primary Schools (Msasani A and Msasani B) where DG Bob will see the work done on the school libraries.

Along with the visit, DG Bob will present a cheque to the school Master for payment of outstanding water bill that the school owes to the water authorities. This support will ensure that the students have access to clean water for use at school, which works towards Rotary’s sanitation goal.

Members are encouraged to attend in large numbers. Visitors are most welcome as the meeting provides an in depth overview of the club’s goals as presentations will be made by Committee Directors on their year’s goals.

We are very delighted to be hosting DG Bob at the club and look forward to share with The DG our Joysterbay spirit.

Time to Reflect on Rotary Commitments

Posted by Zaituni Ituja on Sep 16, 2015
If you had not seen this article that was circulated in one of our weekly meetings, here's your chance. This is an article from a newsletter in Nairobi, The Asian Weekly.

Yes we know it's been a long time since the induction, over three months after the ceremony, however, let's take a moment to recall the commitments made on the induction night and work towards the club goals. It is not too late, we still have (a little less than) nine months to go and with commitment a lot can be done.

See you all at next week's weekly meeting. Tuesday, 7:30 am at Golden Tulip.

Let's go Joysterbay!

Posted by Zaituni Ituja on Sep 08, 2015
In our recent club meeting we were visited by a team from Don Bosco Youth Training centre and we were delighted to hear of the program they have for the youth. This is surely something we are just getting our hands on but we are very excited that this is a project that may well go in line with the District’s Vijana Poa program.

The Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam Oyster Bay applauds efforts by institutions such as Don Bosco youth centre which aim towards youth development and looks for ways to be involved and make a greater impact in the surrounding communities.

Posted by Zaituni Ituja on Aug 13, 2015
Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam Oyster Bay handed over 2 libraries at Msasani Primary School A and B to kick off a series of projects to be done around the two schools.

The handover took place the morning of 11th August 2015 at the school grounds in a ceremony that was decorated with poetry and traditional dance performances from the students of the two schools.

Speaking at the ceremony, the President of Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam Oyster Bay, Moh Versi, urged the students to utilize the library facilities effectively. He also encouraged teachers to look after the facility and to support reading habits among students.

The library project was done in collaboration with Read International with the help of volunteers from Rotaract clubs of Dar es Salaam.  The two schools, Msasani A and Msasani B are among the key focus for the Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam Oyster Bay in supporting surrounding communities where the school is expected to receive support in areas of water and sanitation, security, health as well as education where the library was the first step in improving the level of education at the schools.

Celebrating 6th Club Anniversary

Posted by Zaituni Ituja on Jul 29, 2015
The rotary Club of Dar es Salaam Oyster Bay, famously known as Joysterbay, celebrated its 6th Club Anniversary on Tuesday, 28th July 2015. The club which meets every Tuesday for breakfast at Golden Tulip, changed it’s meeting venue and time for this week’s meeting and instead met in the evening at Keg and Dhow for what turned to be a strict business meeting and yet a very fun social event.

Visiting Rotarians from other clubs in Dar es Salaam joined us in celebration of the anniversary and had the opportunity to watch a presentation from Read International on the status of one of the club’s service project, the Msasani Primary School library.

Rotarians and guests were invited to the handover ceremony where the Library will be officially handed over to the school ready for use. The handover will be done on Tuesday 11th Aug, at Msasani Primary School from 08:30am.

Guests and visiting Rotarians also participated in the game of Jeopardy organized and ran by Rtn. Marcus and Rtn. Yashica before proceeding to the social part of the evening.

Karen is an Industrial Psychologist and Managing Consultant and when she has some spare time, she spends it kayaking. It is no surprise that Rtn. David Legge, her kayaking friend, introduced her to the club.

Karen’s personal objective is to be involved in projects around capacity building or developing people, using her skills to contribute back to the communities. We believe the Rotarian community will find Karen a very valuable addition to the family. The Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam Oyster Bay is very excited to have Karen on board.

Karen is also known to enjoy dancing, particularly Flamenco (Spanish) & Latin American ballroom dancing.

Rotary Club of DSM Oyster Bay hands over more than 63 Million T Shillings to scholars

Posted by Zaituni Ituja on Oct 23, 2014
On 21st October, 2014 our weekly meeting wasn't like our usual weekly meetings. While the club members were almost outnumbered by the visiting Rotarians and guests, we had one of our most touching moments in this Rotary year where we became a part of a very good morning to the students who won the scholarship as organized by the club’s scholarship committee. An ordinary morning to some people, but to some of these young boys and girls, this morning opened new doors in their education journey while to others who were already in the scholarship program, the morning was a promise renewed.

DG Emmanuel Katongole: My Family of Rotary

There are many things that I value on earth, but top on the list are Family and Rotary. The fact that I have them both is something I never take for granted. To have a family is great, but to have a supportive family is a blessing. My joy lies in having a family and being a Rotarian. My strength is the support that I get from both. Resty and our children have been there for me and with me in so many ways that I wake up every morning and count my blessings. Having them by my side makes me proud, knowing that they love me makes me feel special and loving them back energises me. In the same way, the support I have received from you, my family of Rotary, cannot be rivalled.

Today's story represents a true Rotarain that truly carries the spirit of Rotary to his workplace. Our very own Foundation's Director Rotarian Markus De Smidt added the logo of Rotary to his permanent menu at the Karambezi Cafe at the Sea Cliff Hotel.

Karambezi is known to be one of the most popular restaurants in Tanzania, with a breath taking view of the ocean, and an incredible food selection attracting a wide and diverse number of residents and tourists. Rotarian Markus has added a Suspended Coffee to the back of his dessert menu with proceeds of the non existent coffee donated directly to the RCOB's service projects. Not only is Rotarian Markus raising money for a good cause but also promoting Rotary to each of his guests by the extending our visibility to his extensive clientele.

She explained that Join Hands aimed at providing care for adults and children that were affected by osteo genesis imperfecta (commonly known as brittle bones), as well as children suffering from NOMA. The aim of the organization was to improve knowledge in order to detect symptoms earlier and provide proper medication and improve the quality of life of the children suffering and in severe pain. Future goals include starting a boarding school suffering from the social exclusion of society. All in all Ute was truly fascinating and touched our hearts. After the speaker, we inducted our newest member, Elizabeth Corbishley into our club. We exchanged flags with our lovely guest, and supporters of the Rotary Medical Camp, The Rotarians from clubs in Seattle. The true spirit of global fellowship. See picture below. Image

Theme Months in Rotary

Each month of the calendar year is celebrated in Rotary with a different theme with the exception of May.

Each club throughout the Rotary world is encouraged to concentrate on programs to promote each of these months.

Rotary focuses on Community Service and promotes International Peace and Understanding. By celebrating each month and using these themes as a guide, Rotarians can ensure that all of the various programs of Rotary are administered throughout the entire year.

August, for Rotary Club members, is Membership and Extension Month, emphasising membership development and the creation of new Rotary clubs.

Our meeting on the 16th of July 2013 was a breakfast meeting with fellowship, fun and flags. Rotarian Peter brought us our new pins and a flag from the  Rotary International Conference in Lisbon. After a delectable breakfast, we had the pleasure of meeting and hearing from the CEO of Sanitas, a future potential partner of our upcoming medical camp. The joyful meeting ended with lots of laughs and fines since IPP Raju had the duty of the Sergeant at Arms.

The meeting on May 31st, 2013, was a heart warming one, we fared goodbye to our very own, Rtn Vincent Payne, who is shortly moving to Kampala. Watch our page for a tribute in the near future. Our guest speaker was a humble and passionate lady, Ms. Kaye Wagner, a donor and friend of Rotary. Through Access, a Canadian company that helps fund university students in East Africa. She said: "Rotary has impacted my life greatly, through Access I was able to sponsor a graduate in Nairobi and over the years developed a magnetic relationship."

Access: Africa American Canadian association society, utilizes churches in the communities and develops them into schools during the week. This way they are able to teach children that had never been near a school. She expressed "The thrilling part is the parents in the community got involved making porridge. Men offered property to make their own schools. Government official to take responsibility of the school and make it sustainable." Kaye also shared photos of a recent opening of Emasera community school.

Stories like Kaye's remind us of the power of Rotary and the impact it has worldwide.

Shine Bright Like a Diamond: Incoming President Nadine's Installation Night

Posted by Sabrina Meharali on May 27, 2013

It truly was a remarkable evening.

The Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam Oysterbay welcomed its first lady President in style and glamour. The beautiful decor, the elegant setup, the bright shinning candles, and incredible flower arrangement were accompanied by great traditional music, a local band, delicious foods, mouth watering dessert and a lot of beauties. The night was a tribute to all women. The first lady president Nadine Atallah had a grand entrance. All the women in Rotary (members and wives) escorted her down the aisle with candles and joy. It was a spectacular entrance for an extremely beautiful and passionate Rotarian, our incoming president Nadine. After which, the men romantically whisked off their wives to their seats.

Our President Raju spoke in his eloquent style, entertaining the guest with his humor while he reported on the success of the club during his year. We learnt about the history of the club through Past President Maninder Lamba, and heard PDG Hatim Karimjee recognize the hard work of President Raju and his team. Although, we are a fairly new club, this year we were able to win three district awards, and were recognized as a leader. We were introduced to the new teams, and witnessed the installation ceremony of the new president and her incoming board. We also inducted a new member, Rtn Sejal Ladwa to enjoy our fellowship and join hands in the service.

We were fortunate to have DGN Harish Bhatt address our club and give the vote of thanks. The Sergeant at Arms: Rtn Rahul & Rtn Aida in their charismatic style stole the show by entertaining and humoring the crowd, you could hear the laughs all around. We had a few fun Raffle draws led by Rtn Marcus & Rtn Leena after which we danced danced danced at Club Rouge in Joysterbayian style. All in all it was an unforgettable experience, a night all members and guests would remember for years to come.

An important piece of Tanzania's heritage is being saved: a stucco portico created by the famous artist George Lilanga. This is also to preserve the heritage of Nyumba Ya Sanaa (The house of art) for the people of Tanzania.

"This is an important initiative and we are proud to play a role in preserving such a major piece of Tanzania's artistic heritage for future generations" said Raju Sheth, President of the Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam Oyster Bay.
